Harlem - Ethiopian Art Exhibition

Coinciding with the 200th year celebration of The Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, comes a group show “Celebrating Abyssinia to Harlem and Back,” hosted by Canvas Paper and Stone Gallery in Harlem, New York. The exhibition is a reflection of the history of Ethiopia, using bold colours, rich strokes, rhythmic symbols and patterns to express subjects ranging from the homeland and culture to prominent societal struggles. The show features five Ethiopian artists and a photographer. The opening reception will be held on Friday, September 5, at 6pm. Read more here by Helina Mtaferia

Nigeria Art Expo Joins the World

As part of its outlined programmes to reposition Nigerian art and artists, the National Gallery of Art in conjunction with Art Galleries Association of Nigeria, (AGAN), will host the first ever Art Expo Nigeria at the National Museum in Onikan Lagos to be held from the 26th through to 31st August 2008. Art Expo Nigeria is an opportunity for all those who love art to come and see the richness of Nigeria's robust visual arts culture. In this show, over 750 art works will be on display and much like ArtExpo New York which is the world's largest fine and popular art fair. Read more from THE GURDIAN

Zimbabwe's Art of Stone

While the art on display at the San Diego Natural History Museum is from Zimbabwe, it's not made for Zimbabweans. The sculptures, known as "Shona art," are made purely for Westerners. But these days, the strife in Zimbabwe is making it difficult for the artists to sell their creations abroad. The regime of President Robert Mugabe has made it more difficult for foreigners to visit the country, and many art dealers have been affected. Read more here from csmonitor.com
