British photographer Georgina Cranston wins FCA Photo Award

_{British photographer Georgina Cranston has won the first ever FCA Photo Award during the opening of the exhibition "African Retrospective 2005/06" on Tuesday night in Nairobi. Her picture of a Sudanese boy drinking water directly from a river received the most votes from the attending crowd. "It is my favourite picture, because it is simple, but it tells the whole story of children in Africa drinking water from unsafe sources", says Cranston. The 28-year-old photographer has been based in Nairobi since October 2005. She travelled extensively in the region, working mainly for non-governmental organizations and UN agencies.}

_{American photographer Brendan Bannon won the second prize with a photograph showing a young man sifting through a garbage heap in one of Nairobi's many slums. The third prize is shared between Evelyn Hockstein (USA) with a photo illustrating the drought in Kenya and Sven Torfinn (The Netherlands) with a picture of traditional fishermen in Kisangani, DR Congo.}

_{The exhibition "African Retrospective 2005/06" was organized by the Foreign Correspondents' Association of East Africa (FCA) and will be shown until February 18th at Alliance Francaise. It showcases the work of about two dozen photographers from 16 countries, including ones from AP, Reuters, The New York Times and a winner of a World}_{Press Photo Award. They were asked to submit their personal favourites, taken in any African country.}

_{Most of the photos have been sold in an auction to support the training of Kenyan photojournalists. FCA represents journalists who are based in the region and has about 300 members and associates. The printing was sponsored by Hewlett Packard. The prizes were sponsored by Indian Ocean Beach Club, Let's Go Travel and L'Osteria.}
